Formed with the Horserace Totalisator Board Act of Parliament in 1928; took first bet in 1929.  Current status: in government ownership with privatization pending.  Monopoly on pool betting in the UK, but also operates a fixed odds business through 540 betting shops, on-line and by phone.  Totepool operates on all 59 racecourses in the UK, as well as a distribution network through Tote Direct of over 8,000 betting shops and third party internet providers.
